My phone buzzes on the table, startling me. I pick up the device and roll my eyes. It’s Leo. Figures.

“Hey,” I say. He doesn’t even bother to greet me.

“Where the hell were you today?” is his demand.

I have to pull the phone from my ear so Leo doesn’t bust my hearing. “What are you talking about?”

“My first day back and you didn’t even throw me a party?”

If we were in the same room, I’d punch him. “You were on vacation. You don’t deserve a welcome back party.”

He lets out a rueful chuckle.

“If you knew what I went through today, you’d disagree.”

“Yeah, okay, but it’s like that every day in the ER. Did you just call to tell me you wanted a party? Because I’m not baking you a cake.”

He laughs. “Some friend you are. But no, I didn’t call about a party. I wanted to know what happened with that girl, you know, the patient you’re in love with.”

My words come a little too fast.

“I’m not in love with her.” I like her, definitely. I’m in lust, definitely. But no one said anything about love. Leo may be a player but perversely, he’s also the biggest romantic of our crew. He’s the guy watching shitty rom-coms alone in his apartment. I’ve seen his DVD collection hidden under his TV, and there are lots of covers with couples kissing in the rain.

“Whatever. It’s been two weeks. You make a move yet?” he demands again.

I snort with exasperation.

“I told you, I can’t,” is my lie. “She’s my patient, and even if I could, I wouldn’t.” The fib won’t kill me. After all, Leo doesn’t need to know what happened between Summer and me even if the images of her sweet body are still burned on my brain. Those huge, creamy tits and spread legs haunt my dreams and make me forget to swallow sometimes.

Leo is quiet for a minute. “I don’t get you, man. I’ve never seen you talk about a girl the way you talked about her that night. So what gives?”

I try to throw him off the trail.

“You were drunk. I think you’re imagining things.”

“I was drunk, but I remember every word. You’re into her. You should go for it.”

I make a noise of disbelief in my throat.

“She just got her entire world ripped away from her,” I say. “She’s bound to a wheelchair. She has to come in five days a week for therapy. She’s clearly messed up from the accident, at least mentally. It wouldn’t just be unprofessional of me to hook up with her, it would be fucking amoral.”

There’s a pause.

“Holy shit,” Leo says in a hushed tone. “You slept with her, didn’t you?”

Of course, he knows because Leo knows everything. “I didn’t.”

“You did. Holy shit! You actually went for it. Good job, my man.”

“I didn’t sleep with her.”

Leo pauses. “But you did something with her.”

I could keep telling him he’s wrong, but he won’t believe me, and I’ve never been much of a liar.

“I did do something with her,” is my confirmation.
